Why not to delay, when deciding addiction treatment is needed: A step-by-step guide
In my 15 years in the field of Addiction Treatment, most of my work has been on the front end of someone getting acquainted with the services and admitting to drug rehab. One thing that is very important is getting someone into treatment right away when you identify a problem. Here is a step by step guide:
1. There is a problem
Sometimes individuals and family members cannot accurately assess that a problem is severe enough for treatment, that is why bringing in an objective source that is familiar with treatment and addiction is important.
2. We have decided addiction treatment is needed
Most people who call treatment centers never actually admit. The reason is that the very nature of admitting you have a problem and that drug rehab might be appropriate is a huge step, and unless supported, it might not materialize into the life-saving treatment one needs. When it comes to the deadly disease of addiction, overreaction is far less fatal than underreaction.
3. We have decided on a treatment center
We see people waffle at the most insignificant details once treatment has been decided. One minute they are totally committed, the next they are out because there is not a pool and sparkling water. The important elements of treatment and the only ones that should be a part of the decision are the clinical ability of the program and the support offered. Everything else is just icing on the cake.
Addiction does not get better on its own, and people that don’t have problems don’t call treatment centers.
