OHR Gives to San Juan Elementary School Students for Outdoor Science Program

Science is so important for our children to learn and utilize. As part of a growing science program, the 5th-grade class of San Juan Elementary School planned to attend a 4-day, 3-night outdoor science program at Emerald Cove Outdoor Science Institute[1] in December 2018.

San Juan Elementary School is located at 31642 El Camino Real, San Juan Capistrano, CA 92675 – not far from the offices of Ocean Hills Recovery. When Ocean Hills Recovery heard about an opportunity for students to expand their knowledge of science in an out of the classroom experience, we wanted to help.

As you can imagine, the cost of this type of experience can be quite high. Ocean Hills Recovery, Inc. was able to provide a donation for the students to attend the sleep away camp.

The students attended camp on December 17-21, 2018. While at ECOS Institute, the students learned about wildlife biology, forest ecology, geosphere, astronomy, survival skills, careers in science and participated in night hikes. Getting outside, removing distractions like cell phones, and learning and working with a team were all a part of this experience – and we’re sure some S’mores were consumed as well. Through imaginative and creative lessons and experiential learning, students will carry what they learned through the rest of their schooling.

The students and teachers expressed their gratitude for the donation by holding an assembly to thank the staff of Ocean Hills Recovery in May 2019. They presented 170 handwritten thank you notes from each of the students in the 5th-grade class to the staff of OHR.

We are thankful that we are given the opportunity to give to our local community, especially to programs that help our children.
